Stop Chasing Unrealistic Protein Goals

1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Anyone set this goal and fail miserably while eating unhealthier than before? Trends in the health and fitness industry often come from good intentions, but we get so hyper-focused on one detail or aspect that we forget all the other components.

You hear it everywhere, eat more protein. I think this is a good goal, but what are we sacrificing? On busy days I would grab a protein bar as a meal replacement, but quickly it became a habit. Suddenly it was 6pm and I had not eaten any fruits or vegetables. Getting our fill of fiber and micronutrients is just as important as our macro goals. Now don't get me wrong, I still love protein powder and will use it to power up oatmeal, cereal, greek yogurt, shakes, etc. My point is that you can't lose site of the big picture.

Unless you have an incredible grasp on the basics, are a professional bodybuilder, or you have the support of experts, I would recommend that you try to get 2-3 good sources of protein a day (i.e. egg, chicken, beef, greek yogurt, etc). Next, focus on adding more fiber to your diet think beans, oats, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and fruits. P.S. do you know how much fiber you should get in a day? No? If you're an adult it is most likely between 25 to 30 grams a day. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is typically WELL below this metric.

A more holistic, sustainable goal is to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables by 100 grams (per week) until you are consistently eating ~800 grams of fruits and vegetables per day.

TLDR: Eat more fruits and vegetables, don't become so focused on one aspect of your health that you ignore or sacrifice other aspects, find the balance.
